Actually the Engine protection systems are part of the Main Engine and Auxiliary Engine controls since within these controls is included a very detailed monitoring of all operating parameters of the engines resulting in total control of its working conditions.

However, since all processes that take place in a vessel”s engine-room affect directly or indirectly the main engine, all the equipment and procedures in the engine room must be monitored and protected.

The Protection part of the control therefore, controls:

  • Engines
  • Gearboxes
  • Valve operation
  • Shaft brakes
  • Peripheral equipment
  • Safety interlocks etc

The protection is effected through alarms if some parameter of equipment nears the limits of its operational levels, and automatic shutdowns if the alarms are not acknowledged, or if safety operational limits are surpassed.
