In classical terms a Stand-by installation refers to one or more generator sets that are called to operate when the primary source of power is no longer present.
The aim of a stand-by project is not to better the operation of the generator sets of the compound but to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of the needed quantity and quality of power for its proper operation.
Based on the above a stand-by installation includes:
- Automatic management of the primary source of power (e.g. multiple sources) via differential redundant scenarios.
- Automatic management of the generator sets to achieve a reliable delivery of alternative power and prevent a blackout or realise a fast blackout recovery.
- Constant monitoring of the health and quality of the delivered power to minimize the possibility or duration of a power blackout.
Regarding the generator sets installed, a stand-by installation designed and implemented:
- Fast operation with the ability to undertake load within 8-12 sec (depending on the number of sets operating in parallel).
- Synchronisation with the grid ensuring a smooth transition of power from the sets to the grid (no blackout returns).
- Proactive operation depending on the quality of the grids power where the sets may be called to smoothly (without blackout) undertake the load as a preventive measure (unstable network).
- Ability to move power from the grid to the sets and back maintaining a stable frequency and voltage in cases of scheduled blackouts (e.g. maintenance).
- Strict fault management scenarios where-by power is ensured to critical loads even if some generators malfunction during operation.
